Pregnenolone has been described as the grandmother of all steroid hormones since all steroid hormones, over 150 of them, are derived from cholesterol-converted pregnenolone inside the mitochondria of many different types of cells, such as the brain, retina, myelin sheaths, adrenal gland, liver, skin, thymus, and testes or ovaries. Pregnenolone has been shown to support the immune system, mood, and memory. This central hormone can be converted into numerous other hormones in the body, such as DHEA, progesterone, estrogen, testosterone, cortisol, and aldosterone. Also noteworthy is that pregnenolone has a specific stimulatory action on brain function. Pregnenolone is being explored for use in acute management of brain injury and stroke.
